12.02.2025 – Florense Abbey

N39° 15.168′ E16° 42.072′

For this Florense Abbey (1st picture), which to make matters worse was half full of scaffolding (2nd picture), I had a horror trip behind me.

This time not through the wilderness but through the city. There are indeed main roads in Italy that get narrower and narrower without warning. (picture 3).

I was travelling on one of these, through San Giovanni i Fiore. After every bend, I thought it would get better. But it didn’t. A huge queue of cars had already formed behind me. And then the limit was reached.

The next section was so narrow that I wouldn’t have even reversed. And reversing was the only option if things didn’t improve.

I stopped and asked the driver behind me if he spoke English. Thankfully, he confirmed that he did. But in my excitement I spoke to him in German. We got on anyway and he assured me that things would get better after this bottleneck.

I had to fold in both side mirrors to get through. The highlight at the end was a 90° bend in which I had to manoeuvre back and forth three times so that the houses didn’t scrape me.

Finally I made it, as you can see in the 4th picture. I first walked along the road that was supposed to take me out of the village to make sure I didn’t have to call the police, who would have had to organise road closures for me.
