N39° 15.168′ E16° 42.072′

I had a horror trip to this Florense Abbey (1st picture), which, to make matters worse, was half covered in scaffolding (2nd picture).

This time not through wilderness but through the city. In Italy, there are actually main roads that become narrower and narrower without warning. (Image 3).

I was driving on one just now, through San Giovanni i Fiore. After every bend, I thought things would get better. But they didn’t. A huge queue of cars had already formed behind me. And then we reached the border.

The next section was so narrow that I wouldn’t even have been able to reverse. And reversing was the only option if things didn’t improve.

I stopped and asked the driver behind me if he spoke English. Thankfully, he confirmed that he did. In my excitement, however, I spoke to him in German. We managed to understand each other anyway, and he assured me that things would get better after this bottleneck.

I had to fold in both side mirrors to get through. To top it all off, there was a 90° bend at the end where I had to manoeuvre back and forth three times to avoid scraping the houses.

Finally, I had made it, as you can see in the fourth picture. I first walked along the road that was supposed to lead me out of town to make sure that I wouldn’t have to call the police, who would have had to organise road closures for me.
