🌿Wiesbüttsee & Wiesbüttmoor – Natural Treasures Between Moor and Mixed Forest
In the Hessian Spessart Nature Park, hidden between moss-covered forest floors and a mysteriously dark lake, lie two almost untouched natural refuges: the Wiesbüttsee and the Wiesbüttmoor. Off the beaten track, they promise an intense nature experience for anyone who wants to get away from it all. Mirror-smooth water, the play of light in the evening sun and the gentle hum of nature – this is where tranquillity and wildness come together.

🌳 Between Ferns, Birches and Soft Forest Floor
The Wiesbüttsee lies in a shallow depression surrounded by dense mixed forest. The surface of the water is deep dark, almost black, and looks like a still eye in the forest when the sun is low. The Wiesbüttmoor begins just a few steps away – a wetland biotope that gives an almost mystical impression with its birch islands and mossy areas.
The moor itself is strictly protected, but can be viewed from a hiking trail. From here, there is a fascinating view of the habitat of rare plants and animals, including sundew, cotton grass and, with luck, black storks and adders. The region is not only a natural jewel, but also a place to slow down.
🏗️ History and Use of the Wiesbüttsee
The Wiesbüttsee was artificially created in 1765 – not for local recreation, but as a technical aid in mining. According to the plans of the mine foreman Johann Philipp Cancrinus, it was used by the Bieber mines to drain and ventilate the tunnels and as a water reservoir for the winding systems in the nearby Lochborntal valley. Until 1925, the water power drove the machines of the ironworks in the Lochhütte. This makes the lake a rare example of an early industrial body of water that is now embedded in a natural landscape.
🌱Wiesbüttmoor – A Relic from the Ice Age
The Wiesbüttmoor, directly adjacent to the lake, is the highest upland moor in the Spessart and was declared a nature reserve in 1953. The development of the moor began when the former swamp forest was drained by mining and clearing. Today, the area is a nutrient-poor habitat for specialized species such as the carnivorous sundew, the sheath cottongrass and the rare rafter rush. The shy adder is also native to the area. As part of the European Natura 2000 network, the 196-hectare FFH area makes a valuable contribution to the protection of sensitive moorland ecosystems.
